Hornitos Tequila

NOM: 1102

Distillery: Tequila Sauza, S.A. de C.V.

Region: Lowlands

Hornitos tequila is a Sauza product. Higher up in the quality scale from other Sauza brands basic Sauza names, Hornitos strives to deliver a quality product at a fair price.

The bottles aren’t all that flashy and the marketing’s quite modest, but Hornitos is a definite step up from Sauza tequila. Still, it's a level below Sauza's premium brand, Tres Generaciones

On to the brands…

Hornitos Blanco

Type: 100% blue agave.

Aging: no aging.

Price range: $ 20-30 (750 ml)

With a medium alcohol burn and a crisp flavor, Hornitos Blanco is not a personal favorite. It’s got a medicinal taste I can’t stand, but it makes mean margaritas.

Hornitos Reposado

Type: 100% blue agave.

Aging: aged for 2 months.

Price range: $ 20-30 (750 ml)

I’ve heard from tequila “veterans” that Hornitos Reposado used to be a top-shelf drink. It sold well, tasted fantastic, and was largely regarded as one of the best tequilas in the market.

If this is true, however, then Hornitos Reposado is far from its past glories. The agave flavor isn’t as strong as you’d expect in a 100% blue agave spirit. The flavor is somewhat coarse (and not from the agave) and the finish is nothing to brag about.

I can’t find anything particularly noteworthy about this tequila. Still, it’s budget-friendly. Get it for mixing in large parties, I suppose.

Hornitos Anejo

Type: 100% blue agave.

Aging: 12 months in oak barrels.

Price range: $ 20-30 (750 ml)

This 40% alcohol tequila is the most decent in the pack. I’m guessing scotch and cognac lovers could grow fond of this one (due to the similar texture and complex aging).

It’s a shooter and a mixer, but I won’t be trying it soon as a sipper.

Summing things up...

Hornitos tequila is a definite upgrade from any tequila with “Sauza” in its name. However, that’s not an important enough reason for me to buy it.

I can see these tequilas being a hit at a large party, but otherwise “invest” in a better, top shelf brand.
